New Fly Tying Programs in Denton & Roanoke

| October 16, 2024

Off and Running

The Military Veterans Peer Network for Denton (DCMVPN), and The Art Room Denton both have new programs for US Military Veterans who are interested in learning how to tie flies, and even how to fly fish the local waters of North Central Texas.

The Roanoke fly tying group meets at a great facility, called Veterans Point, surrounded surprisingly by some open land that still remains in that area – just off one-lane HWY 377. It’s easy to find, and a challenge to get to in these days of Denton County driving gridlock (35W was at a standstill yesterday from Denton-south).

“Fly fishing is a sport of connections, the angler, the river, and the friends you make along the way that become lifelong buddies who share the same passion.   At our program at Veterans Point, open to all North Texas veterans and their families, our goal is to facilitate all of those connections, and teach our participants, from beginners to experts all of the skills necessary that will advance their passion and create good friends along the way,” Veterans Point Fly Tying Program Leader Steve Setian said.

The Art Room Denton had their first fly tying gathering last Saturday, at 721 S. Locust Street in Denton, and the familiar faces that attended were willing participants in the fly tying frustrations that always come with first attempts at tying flies. As the leader of this, what could be called, “sister program” to the DCMVPN program, I was happy with the turnout and the willingness of participants to try something new and challenging – bright and early on a Saturday morning in Denton, Texas. And I was happily surprised by how quickly the three-plus-one picked up the terms and pieces and parts of tying a fly – and put them all together to form a classic woolly bugger patterned fly. Now, let’s try it on a smaller hook!

Fly tying is integral to the entire adventure for many, many fly fishers. I know my sanity tends to return for a visit during long wintertime sessions at the vise, and we are headed that direction – toward winter – in North Central Texas right now. As you know, this part of Texas basically boils down to two seasons now; summer and winter, with nearly extinct transitions that were once called “fall,” and, “spring.”

From one of the people I met last night, I heard there is a TPWD Dallas Fly Fishers event at the Rosemeade Rec Center 9A-to-3P this Saturday! This is a free event put on by THE DALLAS FLY FISHERS CLUB in Dallas, Texas. Here is the MAP TO THE ROSEMEADE REC CENTER in Carrollton, Texas.

Feel free to contact me about the services the Denton County Military Veteran Peer Network offers, and I will connect YOU to THEM. Remember, there is no cost for participants in these programs. All you have to do is connect with them / The Art Room for more details.
