Outside The Door

Lower Laguna Madre South Padre Island

How often do you wonder: What is happening outside my door?

For me, it is every morning now, and that is because of what is outside my door. The Lower Laguna Madre is down two flights of stairs, and I can watch the tide changes against the bulkheads, as they tell me exactly what is happening in the huge hyper-saline habitat that expands in the most inviting vision, an invitation to visual exploration if nothing else! It is so clean and clear right now, mostly due to the mild weather and low winds.

And what luck to arrive on some truly extreme tides – big variations cause movement, and movement causes some real fish feeding activity. It’s an education in process for me, the tides showing more oyster shell than I remember, more grass and that gooey bottom. I’m not near that famous sand, but you can bet it is on the radar, a radar that is target rich right now!
