NOTE – The sun DID come out today, finally, after more than a week of dreary weather here in North Texas. Temps are looking into the 50’s, even 60’s this weekend! Time to get back to work on the Airstream, but if you want to fish –
THURSDAY: TEXAS FLY FISHING REPORT©
Welcome to the first ever THURSDAY Texas Fly Fishing Report! You probably thought this move should’ve happened a long time ago, but it took awhile for me to come around to the logic of providing fresher information for the vast majority of Texas fly fisher’s weekend outings.
We’ve been working on a more formal introduction and closing for the videos, which debut here on this AUDIO ONLY report.
If you fly fish in your part of Texas, readers here would love to hear about your successes – in some detail. Feel free to send in your reports to be part of this report. If you are a guide in your part of Texas, readers here (potential clients), would love to hear about your successes – in detail.
The North Texas Winter Pattern
The fly fishing pattern for the North Texas fly fisher:
- look for a break in the weather
- look at this website for latest information (heh heh)
- load your gear in the car
- get in and turn the key
- go to Oklahoma
The East Texas / Houston Winter Pattern
The fly fishing pattern for the Houston fly fisher:
- look for a break in the weather
- look at this website for latest information (heh heh)
- load your gear in the car
- get in and turn the key
- go to Louisiana Marshes
Unless you are close to one of the cooling lakes I’ve mentioned in the past, if you live north of Austin … you’re thinking about filling your Texas-sized auto with $1.67 gas and heading for other parts, especially since the Government dedicates this weekend to being three days long in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
The downside? You’re not the only one with these thoughts heading into this weekend. If you aren’t thinking about, say Oklahoma, then you are THE ONLY ONE not rubbing your keys in your hot little hands. I’ve been to Beaver’s Bend, Oklahoma, for the MLK weekend before, and there’s only one more zoo-like time to be there – Oklahoma spring breaks. My advice: As frankie say, “Relax. Don’t do it.”
As you can see from reading, we have particular grooves, well worn and deep, that form from beating paths to the same geographies year after year. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that, but you know how it is around here; we’re always looking to take that road less traveled.
