Monday Morning Sidewalk

| July 1, 2019

Another one of those mysterious weekends now past. I hope you are all in your Monday Morning places with bright shiny faces.

I spent the past two days on Lake Ray Roberts assessing the damage from the floods, and I can tell you there is damage to the carp fishery. Where are they? Well, the carp are nowhere I was the last two days. Sure I saw a few handfuls, but the wind or the clouds made getting a clean shot almost impossible. And the numbers? There’s the rub.

SHIPPING AND HANDLING

Last week was one of odds-and-and ends shipping of fly line mats — the new name for the round model is the “Venus Fly Line Trap” – and shipping out our original fleece Fly Rod Socks. I am always amazed by the reach of the internet. Addresses were from a little town in the Florida Panhandle, to Yonkers, New York. I have to admit I enjoy the products shipping to new dots on the big beautiful map.

RED WHITE BLUE

Tie your best patriotic fly this week, send in a picture, and the best fly will win something to make it worth your time (a surprise). If you’re too good to send it here, just hashtag it on your Instagram account with #TexasFlyCaster and #4thofJulyFly. For some reason I am feeling a little more patriotic this week. Maybe we are about to turn the corner on these dark times?

DANNY SCARBOROUGH

Many of our readers are familiar with Houston fly fishing’s Danny Scarborough (www.houstonflyfishing.com), and a few of you may know he has relocated to Dallas – Fort Worth, Texas. Let us all extend our sympathies to Danny for this tragic turn of events! In reality, Danny is quickly making a silk purse out of the sow’s ear that is North Texas fly fishing. According to Danny, he is finding moby size carp at Lake Fork, and he’s getting zeroed in on Tawakoni as well. He also mentioned a local bowfin population. Somehow I get the feeling the white collar crowd in DFW isn’t quite ready for the beastly grinnel bowing their fancy fly rods – not yet.

SETTING THE PACE

We have about three weeks until a “Turn-and-Burn” trip to Port O’Connor, Texas, and I need to find a pace where I can bring you some “Texas Fly Fishing” updates and a review of some new SIMMS shorts that arrived last Friday. I also have a speaking engagement later this month at local retirement community – ROBSON RANCH. The community apparently has an active fishing club, and a sub-cult of fly fishers that are looking for a local fix. (And you thought all they did was play pickleball!) MEANWHILE, feel free to show me where you are on your Mid-Summer day’s fly fishing dreams — send photographs and information to me any way you want.

NOTE: I have a faulty trackpad on my laptop, so if you see anything strange in the text? That’s the reason why.
