Fly Fishing’s Newest Journey of the Mind

For those who’ve been around long enough (subtract ten years and see where you were), you may remember this website started off with words. Then, it quickly lead to sounds in the form of slideshows with audio, and what I called “FlyPodCasts.” The edge was bleeding at the time,  but how could I know that a simple phone in our pockets would lead to a revolution in the way we show and share (remember my original mission statement?) information and nowadays bragging rights on FLY FISHING IN TEXAS.

Heck, in the earliest of www.texasflycaster.com history, I certainly brought the base well beyond “FLY FISHING IN TEXAS,” and expanded our horizons to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Colorado and New Mexico.

It didn’t take long – a few outdoor designed waterproof cameras, and a few phone upgrades – for video to go flying past audio podcasts as a means to show you all I could find about fly fishing, fly tying, techniques, reviews and social events and then my guiding for carp. The more video I captured, the more I wanted to do more and improve more. THAT DRIVE still exists as I press these keys. Yet, we have had our audio appetites whetted here on occasion – late night music countdowns from snowy, frozen oil fields along the Red River, audio fishing reports and more.

HOWEVER, with the maturing of iTunes Podcasts, and the falling away of the chafe of bad-to-terrible Podcasts, and ONE fantastic audio interview in Rockport; I am looking to make our way back into audio journeys of our minds via iTunes Podcasting. You can be sure the Texas Fly Caster YouTube Channel will keep on trucking, but until I finally have a real budget for more REAL GEAR to record top-shelf video – the technical progress of the YouTube Channel is hobbled on location stories. On the other hand, I have had plenty of gear ready for the entry point of quality Podcasting NOW. The gear just sat there, until now.

The only thing to develop is … the audio journey in a way that paints a picture you can see in your mind’s-eye only. I’ll be honest with you, there’s a big field here to plow – as Bernie would say, “H UUU GGG E.” I can see hear a time when we do audio taken from phone interviews of other fly fishing guides, fly fishers, and fly fishing industry movers-and-shakers. Those phone interviews require some technical powers I have yet to find (help me if you can).

I will also be honest; you may get some “artsy-fartsy” Fly Podcasts as well. I actually started, then forgot about, a collection of water sounds from Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico. Finding those would be near impossible, so we will just have to go do them again. I am anxious to try recording fly fishing audio, with all the descriptive talk that goes over it, and see just how that works. If you see some strange guy walking around talking to himself … feel free to approach me, and for God’s sake, start a conversation!
