Grazed by Storms Fly Fishing Dazed and Confused Here
The instability in the weather continued last night, with distant vibrating rumbles finally passing by about 10pm out in the distant North Texas overgrowth. When we depend on the weather, we talk about it a lot! I used to think it was an old man tends the fields thing, but in today’s times, the climate has become more … ever-present and omnipotent. It is what it is. That’s the final word.
I notified the video watching public readers here – the new Wholistic Fly Fisher YouTube Channel (click the new logo TopLeft to go there) has been spun off and I need your support to take that Channel all the way … somewhere … where, I do not know. BUT NOW, I have strained the YouTube Ghosts with a new video coming out this afternoon. This one’s about changing the impeller on my outboard. It’s long and has chapters to it, so if you need to skip to your question? just skip through the forty-plus minute video. That is how long the entire job SHOULD HAVE taken a boat motor pro mechanic, but no, not me! I burned a half a day on this – – with you the jury still out on whether I made it through all the steps correctly. PLEASE watch, and you can decide if I got this one right. It comes out this afternoon. That oil leak has had me puzzled, and my analysis (of where the leak originates) in the video can’t be right.
So we go from a day of storms all around to bluebird skies this morning as I sit and type this one out. One word describes these weather turns – Texas – and we’ll leave it at that. Bigger problems are welling up, pardon the simile, with gas prices …
GAS AT $3.99 NOW
Local gas stations are balking at the number four around here, but the crossover should be in effect before the end of today. Yes, the current powers have delivered unto us unto ME, a serious setback in plans for simple adventures of a simple person this summer, and perhaps the rest of 2026. I shudder at that thought … an entire season lost. Gas price spikes are not exclusive to the current regime, but couple that with rising prices across the board, and falling income brought on by the economy? This may be the perfect storm, and it’s getting harder to hold my tongue.
For once in my fly life, I am going to take the step of calculating distances and cost for the LBJ stories, something I never ever thought I would have to do, and certainly never wanted to do. By the way, I am okay at basic math, but the idea of letters, like X or Y never quite sunk in. One other thing that has not sunken into the US brain; if this Nation was already electrified vehicles? there would be no war in Iran. Drill Baby Drill? What difference does that make? What happened?
Rolling Up Denton Streets
Another school year is in the books, and we enter into the BEST time of year to be living in the FLY FORSAKEN City of Denton, Texas. It is truly safer now. It is quieter now. And the hoards of young barbarians have left the town for summer break. Coming home in the rain yesterday, we made up a song about the beer and the barf being washed off the streets of Denton, and that’s only mostly true. The whole truth is – the blood gets washed off too. Such is the driving in a little town struggling and mostly failing – to become a real city.
END NOTE
In the time it took to write this, about an hour all said and done, the sky went from bluebird back to the timeless grey that is only good for a certain kind of bite, the one that’s harder to find. Remember to subscribe to the Texas Fly Caster YouTube Channel, AND hit the bell so you can get notified on new videos. This next one? You’ll either love it or hate it. And you can hit the new logo on top left column – for The Wholistic Fly Fisher Channel.
I am a perpetual student of the sport of fly fishing, and from where I am in the Dallas Fort Worth area, I try to investigate, experiment and bring knowledge and ideas here – for the benefit of others. And I have been doing it for three decades now. Join the fun! Subscribe!
