Space City Soggy and Still in Recovery

| August 28, 2024

I was treated to a little “disaster tourism” around Spring, Texas, yesterday afternoon. I can tell you there is more damage than you might expect from the hurricane earlier this summer, and it is very concentrated to the point it had to be tornadoes doing the work along narrow and sporadic routes. At least the electricity is back on now! Hurricane Beryl left a mark.

Heavy damage of huge pine trees, that are mostly cut but not yet hauled, surrounded by more pines that stand straight and virtually untouched. The downing is the thing though. If an unlucky barn or house got in the way of the fall, these trees were so big that they left a distinct impression below.

Rain storms are popping all over the region – From Waco south and to the east and west. It was quite a thunderhead show as I made my way, to Houston crossing from Waco on HWY-6 instead of using the I-45 smashup derby raceway route. This weather instability, after months of zero rainfall in Denton, is refreshing to see, and when rain fell on the Tomball Golf Course yesterday? I hardly knew what I was seeing.

Moss Lake Resurfaces

Thanks to a displaced Montana fly fisher I met at a Denton restaurant, the old pursuit of Moss Lake – north and west of Gainesville, Texas – is back on my slow moving radar – for the pursuit of the magic word he uttered, “smallmouth” bass. I love it when someone knows something I don’t! I truly love it. Any North Texas fly fisher willing throw out a word like “smallmouth” has some explaining to do though.

We do know – Moss Lake in my past exploring, appeared like a crater hole to me, all deep and no gradual flats that lead to what I was pursuing THEN – carp. But, that was years ago, before the skiff. We do know – There are “types” of smallmouth bass – river and lake demons, and they have their own unique behavior patterns. We do know – there is a a trigger temperature, that much I learned while riding Texoma with a glitter boat fisherman back in the mid-teens. We do know – we are nowhere near that temperature now in North Central Texas (<=57-degrees sees activity pick up).

I do think – Because of the bowl-ful-ness nature of Moss Lake, it makes sense that it would be a place where smallmouth could drop-off when shallow water gets too hot for them. And the habitat looks inviting from a GoogleMaps perspective. So let’s start a Moss Lake Fishing Google Map for the public NOW, and leave it open for public consumption (and participation?). SHOW AND TELL, baby, SHOW AND TELL. Past Articles Moss Lake Texas .

SO NOW we can add Hubert M. Moss Lake to the list, just another in a growing list of the Driven to Drive fishing spots across the huge State of Texas! If you are already an expert on Moss Lake, feel free to contribute in the comments below! If not, buckle up.
