Monday Morning Making Waves

| August 26, 2024 | 0 Comments

It’s nice to be back in the small groove, called the Monday Morning Sidewalk for many years. For the many newcomers, I warped the old “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” by Kris Kristofferson into my own version into this weekly (almost weekly) column that gives us a chance to keep up with each other.

A Lot to Keep Up With!

New product rollouts are probably getting old for those of you who follow close, but I am glad to humbly report that there is some early sales traction for the new “Rod Sleeves” I am making, and the new Kydex plier sheaths had a good opening weekend as well. Of course things like the monkey knots and saltwater lanyards are a bit more of a skiff and salt niche, and a lot harder to market.

And speaking of selling, I can report to the masses that Los Pescadores Coffee & Outfitters is on the market. The owner has growing family commitments that have taken a higher priority in recent months, and I have been in regular contact with him about our hopes for the South Padre Island store’s future. I am making efforts to find a buyer who will see Los Pescadores and realize its potential and maintain its direction. I am very happy with the startup I did there, and glad to have been the “boots-on-the-ground” for Los Pescadores during those critical early days. Enough said for now.

Please feel free to take a little time to watch my videos and posts on the new product rollouts I have been doing in the last week:

The Fly Fishing?

HOT. And I am not talking the fly fishing in Texas. I am talking weather. We are getting a break this week, and if you want to fly fish big calm water, you can get out early and look for that early action wherever you are. I will actually be in The Woodlands this week, and it looks like rain will also be there because of a pressure system right off the Coastal Bend spinning some moisture onshore. That’s what this heat will do – stir things up a bit!

I met a relocated fly fisher randomly, in a local restaurant, this past weekend. He’s just back from Montana, native to Sanger, Texas, back for family needs. He started talking smallmouth and Moss Lake, two topics that immediately grabbed my attention. We know there is a trigger temperature for smallies, and we know we are nowhere close to it. But it is fun to look ahead on these triple-digit days. Like I told him, I would trade twenty largemouth for one smallmouth – anywhere, all day every day.

Veteran Fly Tying Group Denton County Denton Texas

I am progressing toward a new fly tying event here in Denton, Texas. It’s for veterans in Denton County who have become part of the organization, Denton County Military Veteran Peer Group (MVPG). If you want to donate materials of any kind, or money to purchase the tools? CONTACT ME and I can help make this happen. Contact Kasey Brown at the MVPN – E Mail Casey Brown / 701-866-2758 These fly tying groups will actually be in TWO locations, Denton, and Roanoke, Texas, with another instructor in Roanoke.

OUR MAP

Guys! meant generically of course … Guys, we are in the waning days of what used to be a thing we called, “summer.” Nowadays, it is more like “sum” with the “mer” cut off the end of it. Back to school time for us, or our kids, and the best of months are still hanging in the Colorado or Arkansas air. As we dread Texas summer, we now prepare for another Texas winter of possibilities. Snowmageddon perhaps? Drought continues? We won’t know until we get there, and don’t forget TWO MORE MONTHS of hardcore hurricane season as well. Texas really is “like a box of chocolates,” totally melted by now, but still chocolate in a box. Run Forrest, RUN!

Are you glad the report on TPWD lake stocking is finally done? Send that one to the Pulitzer Committee, why don’t you! I get a strong impression nobody even read it … It was enough wonky to last me the rest of 2024, but … another crazy idea has started to percolate recently – a Denton Town Lake. Guess where? HINT: It would be, inarguably, the most naturally fishy town lake in Texas.
