Before things get just plain out of hand, and Denton does become more like Austin (God forbid), don’t you think it’s about time to see what you’ve been missing. If you don’t get a taste of Denton while it’s still pint sized, the don’t cringe when I say, “I told you so.”
Don’t want to drive all the way to Denton? Stop and ride the DCTA A Train from Lewisville or Carrollton, and ride back the same way. You’re running out of excuses people.

Music Scene – Gregory Alan Isakov at Dan’s Silver Leaf Next Monday

| August 21, 2012 | 1 Comment

This should be a good show in a great venue – Dan’s Silver Leaf, here in Denton, Texas. And it really is about time for a musical break, don’t we think? There are plenty of musicians that have this particular “sound” right now, but getting out and taking your mind off the everyday …

Things are certainly picking up around Denton as it comes out of its annual summer slumber, and refills to the 48-thousand student capacity. Wrong way drivers, and hair twitterers, and soft muscle car driver boys strut their haircuts and new toys. It’s a real sight to see, especially from aging eyes, but then as a fine old man born in the 1800’s once told me multiple times, “Denton wouldn’t a made a town without them schools.”

Here’s the Bio:
“Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now calling Colorado home, Gregory Alan Isakov has been traveling all his life. Songs that hone a masterful quality beyond his years, tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place.

Music has been a stabilizing and constant force. Ive always had this sense about music and writing, that I sort of have to do it. Like Ill implode without it. I probably wouldnt do it if I felt any other way.

His song-craft lends to the deepest lyrical masterpieces, with hints of his influences, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen. He has been described as strong, subtle, a lyrical genius but the source of his writing often remains a mystery to him. My songs have nothing to do with me; they have a life of their own. A lot of times I wont know what a song is about when Im writing it. It just has a certain feeling about it.”
