SPRING SPAWN – Carp Are In Love Once Again

Imagine if humans responded only to mating once a year? How boring and predictable our lives would be! But for carp, for carp it is anything but boring every spring when they find their ways out of the deep and into the shallows for public displays of affection that last a few weeks, or a month at best, and then …

I was on the flats Wednesday, and carp, in historic (as in past history) fashion, were in the pattern we know so well. It is spawning time for carp HERE in North Central Texas. I felt a bit of joy at the sign of spring because I have not seen them this happy and active in a very long time. I actually missed the sight more than I realized. Unlike humans, these carp have plenty of natural interruptions that can reek havoc on their procreative plans. Mega rains, flooding of their nesting, drought and all the outdoor possibilities can be truly daunting. And they have been interruptus for years … until yesterday.

I didn’t mind that I could walk among the breeding if I had chosen to do so; it reminded me of times when I had caught carp by hand in the high flats of Lewisville Lake. They are that blissful and unaware this year.

Then, last night and early this morning came heavy rains and hail here at the Fish Camp North. All I could think of was those fish, and the rocks falling from the sky, rocks they had to dodge – to save their own backs sticking out of the water. Why, when it was such a picture perfect day Wednesday, did the storms seem to punctuate the fragile nature of a carp spawn.

MAKE NO MISTAKE

Make no mistake, there are not a lot of folks who give a single thought to a carp spawning. I actually imagine them laughing at the thought. Not only that, there are the bow killers who take great pride and satisfaction in killing carp this time of year. Why? Because it is so easy of course. Imagine a sport that has success based on how easy it is; a vulnerable breeding fish, and the large ones are the only ones they are skilled enough to hit. Like I have said, shooting pet poodles with a bow is more difficult than what these sports do with the carp population. Are the sports even smart enough to realize – people fish and fly fish for carp, AND guides guide for carp? When they kill carp, they are killing livelihoods – nothing more, nothing less.

AND this is why I have had to cloak the video from yesterday within the YouTube Member category of my YouTube Channel – to keep the carp killers from finding them AS THEY HAVE ON LAKE FORK THIS YEAR. Apparently Fork has rambling party boats with loud music and bow killers working at killing the big carp found on that lake. Great sport eh? It DOES NOT HELP ME to have to drop a video inside a Member’s Only section of my channel at all. Three subscribers will see that video, but I bet none of them are bow hunters! NOTE: There is a YouTube Short from yesterday’s carp spawning surprise.

MORE BAD weather is predicted in the next twenty-four, and from the looks of the sky, I believe it to be so. If you have not yet clued into some great YouTube weathermen, have a look at Max Velocity. He’s a strange guy, but he talks so fast your head will spin – and it’s all weather all the talk all the time.

THANKS for reading! If we can get past this weather and back on track, I will bring you some fantastic words, video and whatever else I can find – on this spring action – before it ends again!
