In The Homeland of Texas Germans – Round Top – Warrenton Texas

The sand bass are ON NOW in North Central Texas! Rumors be gone, as they were when they came weeks ago. NOW is the time to go “Soggy-Bottom” Boys!

And if they are here, then they are everywhere in Texas NOW. That is how it works most of the time: DFW and North Central Texas is the last Texas latitude to get the bounty of the bogs, and the fish tacos are basting in … God knows what … waiting for you to catch them with the greatest of fly fishing ease.

My policy, although I admit a dislike of cleaning fish, is not to keep any fish inside of 30-miles from Dallas and Fort Worth. That isn’t hard to do from here in Fish Camp North, where we have the beautiful water, gin clear in places, of Lake Ray Roberts, and its blitzing acreage of sand bass still to come. Open calm water fly fishing sand bass on the surface? It is one of the permanent imprints in my bird-sized brain, and I always anticipate those times … and anticipation is the game, isn’t it?

Warrenton Junking

Just south of Round Top, Texas, is the “Denton Artists” outpost. It’s a tiny town normally. Warrenton has a population of less than 100 on a day when the wind isn’t blowing. Right now, the place blooms like bluebonnets with people, by the thousands, they come, and we have come to realize they are looking for good junk. The magnet of great Denton Artist’s work is not attracting much metal – in the pocket – so far. It has been a slog for my SO who has held ground for a week now, and is keeping her spirits high – because of the promise of my arrival in a few hours. Relief pitching, I think it’s called?

Our disappointment is probably unwarranted. Just as there are “food deserts” in inner cities, there are “art deserts” that occupy vast areas, huge Texas events and small ones too. We had to throw in on this event because just about every Texan has heard of, or been to Round Top for their twice-yearly event … hundreds of thousands of flat brimmers (and some others) show up in their best Houston and Austin – off the TOP rack – felts and western wear. It’s a very, very good show. And we threw in because we were not alone in that huge Warrenton tent. Let’s hope it keeps the storms out!

I will be out of range for the duration. That means about a week – and I know you’ll miss the Fly Fishing News you find here, but we have to ride this bull out until the buzzer sounds at the end of next week. From what I have seen of this week? Send me text or give me a call – I’ll have time to answer.

MAKING THE BEST OF IT – Warrenton Fly Fishing Sale

In an order to make a silk purse out of my week in Warrenton, I will have my “Fly Box” with me. It’s a giant box of various fly fishing rummage sale items that YOU can show up and buy. AND if you are a fly fisher under sixteen-years-old? there is a code in the video for a free used Howler Hat for YOU! That code works for everyone on other things as well. Watch the video to get a sneak peek at what is in MY fly box! What’s in your fly box these days? Much of the art I procured for the defunct Los Pescadores art gallery is on sale in my booth, and emphasis on “SALE” for much of that fly art as well. Come and get it.

MEANWHILE …

Please enjoy a wonderful week of spring in Texas, from wherever you are! While I am bound to the booth, I will be thinking of you guys … raking in those fish and sending ME photos to rub my overgrown nose in to. If I can get information out, I will. Once we are back in our stalls? A whole spring awaits, and summer .. the long hot summer. I can hardly wait.
