June Monday Morning
Can you believe it? June already, and I have barely been able to establish Spring 25 patterns because of this other variable that seems to not be a variable anymore.
The Weather Variable
Last year we had a well below average carp chase on Lake Ray Roberts, Texas, because of the flooding and drawdown that no scientist I have spoken with can pin down as the cause for not seeing the usual carp activity on the Ray Roberts flats. NOTE: I have to always “hedge” what I say because some newbie will flare up with, “I caught 42 carp in one day there,” so “not seeing the usual” is an understatement of epic proportions.
When it comes to the weather variable, it (North Central Texas weather) in my opinion it has graduated from a “variable” to being what fishermen call a “pattern.” A pattern repeats itself. That is the definition of pattern.
What Goes With a Defined Fish Pattern?
For me, this new pattern means I spend much more time watching the weather. Hence my recommendation of the YouTube weather channel, called Max Velocity. Mr. Max just went over a million subscribers a few weeks ago, and if you want to see the future of weather forecasting? check out Max Velocity.
Another of my new patterns, based on this weather pattern, is transitioning away from North Central Texas proper. That narrow corridor that spans about six or seven Texas Counties, for me, is quickly becoming a no fly zone – for big calm water fly fishing.
Roughly Denton-Collin-Tarrant-Dallas-Cook-Grayson counties if you were to look on a Texas Counties Map, are designated my “Plan B” lakes to try and fly these days.
The silver lining of these days and days of bad weather? I can take the time for physical conditioning and to bring you more along the lines of The Wholistic Fly Fisher© which is truly a passion project about a better fly fishing experience while we age … gracefully.
Battle Royale
Yes, I always think about battling the elements to fly fish the big calms, but the elements can be softball size hail, and wicked bolts of lightning. But, my rain gear is always in the truck, and a little soft rain never hurt anybody. I think it was a glitter boat (former) friend who said, when we were out on a wet day, “… fish gotta eat.” That much is true.
Yes I like battling the elements, a lot. It tests what I have – on the outside and on the inside – in a fair fight. Do you challenge the elements? Maybe I watched too many years of “Deadliest Catch?”
Thanks for reading this Monday Morning. Be sure to subscribe to my newsletter coming out soon. There is great information and some money savings that go along with subscribing. If this “Pattern” holds true, we have a little more (a week of) unstable weather before the Summer of 25 comes along to blaze our saddles!
