Trout Fly Fishing Oklahoma – Why Make it Hard?
MOP FLY – FILE THIS ONE UNDER FLY TYING FOR TROUT (Probably uneducated white males)
One of the reasons I lost some interest in Oklahoma fly fishing for trout over this decade is that it can get pretty darn easy. I say that from my perspective of course, but take a look at that fly tying video and tell me you don’t want to run out to Wal-Mart right now and buy one of those mops. I did. This fly has stirred up discussion in the fly community – more-so than the election. Considered heresy by purists, but to me it’s a joke where anglers (of any skill level) get the last laugh. The only way to find out is to give it a swing though. So stay tuned.
Besides guiding on the Lower Mountain Fork this season, another reason I am undertaking my re-education in freshwater trout is to again share what I learn, and that INCLUDES the flies and techniques that make it “easy” for all of us. I hate to think this fly will actually work, but I’m going to find out!
I do know of certain Central Texas guides who use necklace beads on hooks – on the Guadalupe – to hook their chamber of commerce fish, and attract clients as well as Guad trout. Is there anything wrong with that? It’s only “natural” the slippery slope slid right down to the mop fly, right?

JAY – The mop fly worked great. Unfortunately, mine turned out to be a bit heavy (tied exactly like the video), and I lost way more than I ever lose of other flies. Needs to be tied in a variety of weights. And I am going to go weightless under an indicator as well. HANNA – I just wish I would’ve thought of it!
Hi
How’d the mop fly end up working out ?
I lived in OK for 10 years and have a bunch of family still there. Haven’t fished Broken Bow in a very long time (before the recent improvments).
Did fish the Blue River quite a bit in the late 80s and through the 90s. A beautiful place even if it is artificial (the trout part).
I live in Indiana now and we have a tailwater fishery in SE Indiana that I am going to go down to and see if I can mop up a bit in the next few weeks.
I enjoy reading your blog
Thanks
Jay in Indiana
Haha I love the idea of this mop fly! For me fly tying is about being creative and if someone found a new way to tie a fly that actually works, why not use it? I will definitely buy one of those mops next time I go shopping and maybe I even find another item that you could use to tie a new fly 😀 thanks for the idea!
Cheers!
