Keep On Keeping On

| September 14, 2022

I was watching the latest installment of Mill House earlier today, and Andy Mill was interviewing Captain Mike Holliday, and the Captain was talking about writing, getting into the flow and finding “your voice” when it comes to being a writer …

It reminded me of how I “found my voice” in words – by writing thousands and thousands of them with great consistency. Just banging it out until you’re writing without realizing it … suddenly there are a thousand words on the screen.

If you haven’t seen the Mill House Podcast, be sure you catch that as soon as you can! I may be repeating myself, but Andy Mill is one great interviewer, and quite honestly; I would like to be like him on the mic – when I grow up.

LOS PESCADORES

The merchandise continues to arrive, with nowhere to go but in the third bedroom, and God knows where it ends up at the other address. At least we will be allowed to talk about the brick & mortar location next week! Wow, this is going to make a great book. It would actually make a great book if I stopped my participation right now. This is how strange this trip actually is – so bookended, so clearly an intersection in my life in only a few months. The ride alone is worth the price of admission.

Fly Shop LESSON ONE

I would say the first lesson is simple: Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way. Sure, the younger generation may cringe at such frankness, actually I know they will, but the first thing you want to do – besides working for someone with a vault of money – is to determine who leads and who follows. The financial progression cannot run in a circle. Find the product, make the order submit the order for approval and payment. Then, the accounting department pays the invoice, and the merchandise ships. More on shipping woes later!

Skiff Wiring Finally Getting Organized

My skiff never had a very good wiring diagram. Actually it was a bundle of spaghetti, zip tied, and plastic conduit holding it together, but extremely lacking in organization and efficiency of function. Because of the damage the Lower Laguna Madre can do, it is time to address the mess and try to head off any catastrophes. Solving this problem will be near the end of the wiring game for this skiff, with the future only to be changed by replacing the Optima Blue Top with a lithium battery – when I can finally afford one.

But, this project will enclose the battery away from the elements and add a marine grade fuse block and a ground block for the big items – trim/tilt, starter and jack plate.

So much of the power is dedicated to small electrical items that the internal (also inside the bulkhead with the battery) fuse block will do most of the connecting – both negative and positive fused in amperage from ten to twenty. It is so easy to add small stuff … until it isn’t. Then, it is time to move all the connections off the battery terminals and onto a separate block. And that is exactly where we are now.

NEXT SKIFF MODIFICATION – NEW TRAILER HUBS

The next move, after tidying up the electrical, is to go after the hubs with a new pair of Vortex Hubs by Tie Down Engineering that are all the rage, and just what the doctor ordered for the hyper-saline Lower Laguna Madre.

STICK AROUND

By now you can tell; it’s anything but business as usual around here. I am going to give you guys a look at the changes in the skiff wiring, and I am also going to go through the merchandise we have so far, and what is still to come. WE ARE ALWAYS looking for great products that may not be well-known. You have a chance to participate in the Los Pescadores adventure! Don’t limit yourself to “Outfitter” gear either! We are into coffee (as the name says!), art and other merchandise we haven’t even seen yet!
