Fly Line Selection – The Basics

| September 30, 2020

As the seasons change, and the pace of new fly fishers gets even quicker that it was since the shutdown in April, I thought it would be good to do some basic videos that go over gear.

So we are starting with fly lines, and there’s a good reason for that. Lefty Kreh asked crowds, “Where does the cast start?” The correct answer is, “at the fly.” Then comes the leader, and after that the fly line and rod. If you are just starting to learn to cast, a new fly line can make your day. That is because most, if not all, fly rod “combos” have a decent fly reel loaded up with a significantly indecent fly line.

Of course, some of these better fly lines cost half the price of one of those “combos,” but they will change your attitude about casting and what you and your rod can do.
