No Delays For Guadalupe River Stocking by GRTU

| October 29, 2024 | 0 Comments

I heard from Chris Johnson, and he provided the snapshot of conditions on the premiere trout fishery in Texas – the Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam. Here’s what Chris had to say about the GRTU stocking for 2024-25 season. THIS IS NOT the TPWD speaking, but GRTU, so it will be interesting to hear what TPWD’s plans are – if they have a change in plans to stock Texas trout this year.

“GRTU stockings have not been delayed.  Our water temps are in decent shape considering the warmer weather.  The water temps will also drop with the front coming in next week.  So far, no delays on our end.

LAP program sign up has closed and the sites will open to LAP members on Nov 1.  There is a multi-point sign up process that begins each summer and concludes with the purchase of the passes in Oct.  It’s a simple yet thorough process.  More details should still be available online at www.grtu.org

Temp gauges are tricky things as depth, upstream depth, current velocity, ambient ground water, and air temp influence all play a factor in their readings.  Normally, in the summer, the upstream gauges are coolest given the releases from the dam.  In the winter that inverts because the air cools the water as it moves downstream.  The discrepancies seen now are likely due to a mix of the aforementioned factors.  My guess is that the temperature probe depth is probably most likely to blame for the cooler readings downstream.” – CHRIS JOHNSON, Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited

If Texas trouts are your cup-of-tea, I would make plans to get there first – considering conditions! I am more likely to be found chasing fish that eat those TPWD trout, than to target trout intended for the attraction of kids to the sport of fishing and fly fishing in Texas.
