The Coyote Carp Fly Variant
[display_podcast]
I have hesitated to delve into fly tying videos, although I have been tying since I started fly fishing. How can anyone resist the pull of making an imitation of a divine creation? No matter what, virtually every fly has been tied, so unlike some locals who think they “invented” fly tying, and specifically carp fly tying, we will for the sake of argument assume this and all flies covered here are derived from other flies. It has all been done before. Fly tiers are the stewards of an ever evolving art, and rarely does some complete departure from that reality come along.
The Coyote Carp Fly (CCF) was created by Joel Hays, and the variant is something I came up with when I was having trouble finding coyote fur. It works well on those days when the coyote matches water color too closely.
This is my first tying video, so feel free to criticize, and if no one comments, I will assume it’s perfect. Finding a fresh angle didn’t seem all that difficult, but again I am sure someone has done this before. If not, then don’t copy it – or I’ll reach through the computer and … just let me know if you have a fly you would like to see tied on video and maybe we can get that on for you. Really though, the technical aspects of the video include an audio overdub that does away with the live and often garbled sound from actual dictation while tying the fly. Here, I watch the video and comment on technique and materials as it happens – warts and all. Hopefully, the results are a better audio quality and more interesting commentary.
Future videos, if there are any, will concentrate as much on specific technique as on specific flies because although virtually all flies have been tied, techniques for tying them faster and better are constantly being developed.
