DFW Fly Fishing Guide
By now you know, I guide seasonally on Lake Ray Roberts, Texas. That season runs from April to September on a typical weather patterned year. Unfortunately, there are no typical weather patterns to run these trips by anymore (2025). The past two years, including 2025, have included epic, historic and biblical amounts of condensed timeframe rain events. These rain events have two years of data to form a pattern. But will there be three? Predictability has gone out the window for the once reliable and hugely fun and challenging pursuit of common carp on my skiff along the expansive flats of Lake Ray Roberts.
GREEN TROUT
Much of the last two years has been spent honing in on the abundant, but sometimes illusive “Green Trout.” If you are new to fishing history, “Green Trout” is the name sometimes given to largemouth bass. I guess that was in order to make them more … attractive?
I don’t know how attractive they are, and they don’t give themselves away very often, like the common carp, but after two years of patterning … I am beginning to get the idea. Green Trout are aggressive, opportunist and do have patterns of behavior that present opportunities for those who are willing to blind cast, get up at the crack of dawn, and fish in the nighttime. That is all true!
INSTANT KARMA
Because of the unpredictable nature of our DFW carp habitat, specifically the gin clear waters of Lake Ray Roberts, booking a carp trip in advance is NOW a lost cause. Anyone who says otherwise? They want your money.
It will take me another year of prospecting for bass on fly – on Bois DArc Lake, on Ray Roberts, on Moss Lake and other METRO lakes close to, but I hope not in DFW, to determine: 1) If I really have the grit for the grind, and, 2) How much my guests are willing to grind too! If the chance to secure private pond access appears, and is legitimate, I’ll post an article on this site and on the YouTube Channel as soon as it is available.
In the meantime, you can sign up for HOTSPOTS25, which is my text messaging service to a group of individuals who want the latest information I have to offer about conditions that I either know about, or have heard about from trusted individuals elsewhere in Texas. Emphasis on TRUSTED INDIVIDUALS!
If you want to book a carp trip, this is your first stop – contacting me and signing up for HOTSPOTS25. When you see my notices there, you will also be alerted to my guiding opportunities! Go to the CONTACT PAGE and fill it out with your phone number now! I guarantee NO SPAM CONTENT will come to you. These notices will be short and sweet, but that is how it works now. Small windows of opportunity that can close in an instant. All because of the unpredictable nature of North Central Texas weather during carp season.
BLUE RIVER RIDE ALONGS AND MORE!
I am always looking for friends to join in on outings. The nearest of those fun days in winter is, the Blue River in South Central Oklahoma. It is extremely close, but far enough away, and so much LESS famous than the tourist trap that Beavers Bend Broken Bow has become.
While guides in the Lower Mountain Fork will defend that fishery, and perhaps it is just a need for an image makeover, the truth SEEMS TO BE OBVIOUS; those old days of the Lower Mountain Fork are gone forever. And there are rumblings, in 2025, it may get worse. The Oklahoma Wildlife Department is being forced to reconsider budgets for stocking not just the Lower Mountain Fork, but the entire State of Oklahoma. Seems someone did the math, and those stockers actually cost a small fortune every year. Poor State bean counters … they don’t get how much tourist income a GOOD trout fishery generates, or how many times those trout get caught!
