I was fortunate enough to have the big gun (a real camera, a real GOOD camera) along last spring when I spotted a name on a shrimp boat that reminded me of home, or specifically my whiskey sipping neighbor across the street – Joe.
Photographs, on their own, after thirty-six intense years of being obsessed with the format, do not do as much for my creative juices as do the things one can do with those too literal renditions. The Whiskey Joe is a perfect example of how to transform one of my average images into another, more appealing, less photographic style.
Texas Fly Made in Texas
STORY OF THE GULPY FLY:
It started with watching fishermen catching flounder in Galveston, Texas, at the Sea Wolf Park during migration. Gulps would wash up in pink and chartreuse ... so what was Pops to do? He did what any fly fisher would do - copied a plastic. The Gulp-y Clouser, or Nepolitan as it is sometimes called, is a fly that is also a Pops "GO-TO" fly on low light days, and days when the water is not as clear. The most practical size for this fly is a size 4, and it is saltwater ready - brass eyes, and gold flash.
