Wholistic Wednesday Who Knew?
Do you Know How Strong You Are Right Now? I Sure Didn’t!
RESISTANCE TRAINING IS NOT FUTILE!
If you want to keep fly fishing through your 60’s into your 70s and 80s, you need to understand why resistance training isn’t optional anymore. I’ll discuss how I’m using creatine for mental acuity, doing free-weight training and progressive resistance rubber bands to maintain my casting power. It is time to start rebuilding what you may not even know you have lost. If you already have started down the self-preservation road, tell me what you are doing, what you eat and how you use science and good old fashion strength to stay strong and active in your fly fishing life!
What we are doing here is trying to take advantage of modern medical knowledge in a way that maintains and potentially improves our fly fishing as we age.

Are You Using Creatine To Its Full Potential?
I have already talked about the mental benefits of creatine, and touched on the muscle recovery aspects of creatine, but I am discovering there is a lot more to it than that! To take full advantage of the benefits of creatine, if you add a sustained habitual workout regimen, you may just stave off the situation I find myself in at 65-years old.
But first let’s recap the general realities of creatine that are medically researched and have been tested and reported by humans. As of this writing, there are not enough contra indicators out there (that I can find), as scientifically measured, to say there ARE contra indicators, but do your own research and talk to your own doctor!
1 – Creatine does not magically build muscle. It is not a hormone. It is not a steroid. FACT: Muscle loss accelerates over time.
2 – Creatine supports the “short burst energy” (ATP) your body needs. Does that sound familiar? Think in terms of casting a fly rod!
3 – Creatine supports muscle “preservation.” Increase strength, and increase balance and stamina. Recover faster. Faster readiness as well.
4 – Small weight gain is water. Creatine hydrates muscle cells. Does not add fat.
5 – ATP adds to fuel brain as well. Supports brain energy metabolism.
6 – DOES NOT DAMAGE healthy kidneys. Will elevate creatinine. It is a biochemical effect.
7 – Use with solid foundation of hydration. Stay hydrated! Three-to-five grams per day.
8 – TRAINING is the biggest factor, the one activity that benefits the most.
9 – Won’t change your poor habits. Won’t make you follow better habits. IT AMPLIFIES the work you are already doing!
This video is a pretty darn candid reveal of just how far I have fallen when it comes to that thing we’ve heard called, “Old Man Strength.” You know what I am talking about, although I understand if you object to the term “Old Man” being applied to the man in the mirror. Hey, shit happens. If you take the precious time to watch, I spell out when I actually DISCOVERED I had gotten my “(Old) Man Strength,” and we know we really aren’t OLD when that happens at around 30-years-old, more-or-less. And if you take more of your priceless time to watch the rest of the video, you’ll see when I discovered that power, that fast twitch strength? it was G O N E!
