The Best Fly Fishing Tournament in Texas?
This one got by me, almost.
I came across a tweet the other day about a Texas tournament that’s taking place in the Texas Hill Country river system called “Texas Hill Country Mixed Bag 2012.”
I don’t know who came up with this format, but this is the kind of tournament I would have created if I were smart enough to think of such things. The actual site does have some gaping holes in information, such as who is actually in charge, and how to contact whoever is in charge – for permission (I was seeking) to take words and graphics from the site to promote it (here on Texas Fly Caster). It appears to be a descendant of the Texas River Bassin’ tournament days.
However, if you look at the quality of the information, the point structure and the attention to all the details, the prizes, and the quality of the site – this tournament obviously got it right.
Of course, it’s way late for most of Texas to get on board if you’re not a local to the designated area for the tournament, but if this is in your backyard, what are you waiting for? The tournament started (quietly) in the spring and wraps up in October.
The rules and regulations make my head swim a bit, but I can imagine a North Texas version of this taking place here next spring – with a major simplification of the details, and downscaled prizes (depending on the election outcome of course). No doubt the attention to detail when it comes to tournaments prevents loopholes, but so can simplifying the process.
Visit the tournament site at Texas Hill Country Mixed Bag 2012, and the Scoring & Prizes, the rules state that all fish must be caught on a fly rod or tenkara rod, making this a fly fishing only tournament. Enough said. Go visit the site, and let me know what you think of the format because you may just see a similar format around here next year.
