Just about the time you think you have eighteen years of fly fishing dialed in? they go and change the rules! This is one of the strangest videos I remember making. That is because it really is two stories about one spot divided into about three hours of time. Thankfully, for your sake, I know a bit about editing and a little bit about when to press “RECORD,” and when to press “STOP” on my INSTA 360 Fish Cam!

Ray Roberts Dam Chapter ONE

In the first chapter of this video, I was pretty frustrated that the flows that were happening the day before, had been cut off the day I arrived to actually fly fish it. And the icing on the cake? For the first time anywhere any time, I get run off from the riprap I have been walking over to and fly fishing for the better part of three decades. In a way (watch the video), it was a good thing – to be put out of my misery from not getting a single bite.

What follows is simply the fly fisherman’s prayer answered (watch the video for that actual prayer). The very nice young man, who ran me off, actually said he was going to talk to his boss about opening up the dam, and he did! And it did get opened up.

The difference between before the flow and after the flow is proof positive. Flows trigger bites, plain and simple. So yes, this video does take a while to unwind itself, and work out a few knots in my leader. But in the end? You’ll just have to watch the video!
