Monday Morning Turkey Walking the Sidewalk

arroyo colorado fly fishing in texas

Have you ever watched a wild turkey parade? I can’t remember what it looks like, but I do remember my most surprising encounter with wild turkeys.

I was fly fishing down in South Texas, on the Arroyo Colorado, it must have been in September or October, and I was leaving the end of the road out of Adolph Thomae Park headed back into Arroyo City. A morning fog had rolled in just as the sun was coming up, so I was going slow.

Before my eyes emerged huge lumps of feathers, dozens of them, walking casually down the middle of the street. The street, not a dirt road, not the sidewalk; we’re talking 2925 Arroyo City, Texas. There were so many wild turkeys in the street I had to stop and wait for them to move. I kid you not.

Having spent a lot of time on the Arroyo as a kid, fishing there and going out of there to get to Three Islands in the bay, I never heard or saw a turkey around there as a kid. I guess they were always there, but they have discovered the bright lights and big city of Arroyo City since the 1970’s.

I hope you all have a great week. I am about to send out the Christmas gift giving Texas Fly Caster Newsletter in the next few days, so be sure to hit that newsletter signup (MailChimp) in the left column and sign up. For those of you who don’t know, this newsletter will be the first anniversary newsletter, and they have a very high read rate – I appreciate that! And for those of you who enjoy the long version of gift ideas, stay tuned here as we outfit the fly fisher from head to toe.

ICE NOT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR …

Post Note – I am on the road to the Blue River as this hits the digital realm. A certain friend has this entire week off from his associate principal gig, so it’s a flask of Bulleit Rye and ten layers of warmth on a bicycle weaving my way up the C-n-R in a few hours. It’s always fun to test the survival skills.
