It’s a beautiful Friday out there! Happy Valentine’s Day – did you forget? (Thank me later.)

Fly Fishing in TexasIf you are looking for a fantastic resource for fly fishing art, in old tech words – a “hub” – be sure to visit MidCurrent Fly Fishing News’ Fly Fishing Art page.

We’re in the middle of the Thin Line Film Festival here in Denton, Texas, and that event includes music as well as an opportunity to hit new places like – East Side Social Club, the nicely aging Oak Street Draft House as well as the fantastic new restaurant on the Square – LSA Lone Star Attutude.

Don’t forget that there will be a team of fly tiers at Bass Pro in Grapevine, Texas, tomorrow morning – as usual. If you are interested in the fly tying art of fly fishing, these folks will give you a dynamic look inside one of the most, if not the most, artistic activities any kind of fishing has to offer.

Conditions are close to perfect for chain pickerel action at Daingerfield State Park, so if you haven’t hit that spot, it’s well worth the drive from wherever you may find yourself – looking out a window wondering what to do this weekend. One of the early stories I did was on chain pickerel at Daingerfield, and it was good clean fun. Stinky fish, but fun. Try and keep your composure when you see the reeds rustle as a baby pike comes out to attack your fly while you wait for him to get there!

Not too long ago, I was able to guide one of my guests to a lake record at Daingerfield – for largemouth bass. That’s a record that’s made to be broken at that lake. And obviously there are larger chain pickerel than the current record shows. I read somewhere recently that Rob Woodruff has guided folks to chains up to 3.5 pounds. Now that translates into something like a 30-inch chain pickerel, and one heck of a fight!

Let me know if you’re interested in Daingerfield this weekend. I bet I can get there. No matter where you fish this weekend, take all precautions on the water; water temperatures are still in the upper 30’s to mid 40’s, and hypothermia will set in very quickly if you happen to go in. DON’T LET the warm weather fool you!
