THE BIG YEAR

DRAKE MAGAZINE JOINS MAINSTREAM fly fishing
NOTE – A publication known for its outsider image, Drake Magazine, sent out an uncharacteristic mass e mail today, and it contains a lot of what one could consider “establishmentarianism” social media information. Who could blame the magazine owner, Tom Bie, for eschewing the social network for so long? It is a helluva lot of work, don’t I know!

“The Big Year” contest has a few goals listed in the link to the story, and the way we Drake followers play the game, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. All I can say is, heh heh heh. Welcome to the fray.

If you are unfamiliar with Drake Magazine, it remains one of the prominent fly fishing magazines despite the onslaught of digital “e-zines.” E-zines rely on free content from contributors while collecting income on advertising. Drake, on on the other hand has quality images, creative content, and the contributors are compensated for usage.

I check in with the Drake Magazine website occasionally, and always make a stop at their discussion boards – just to make sure they are as stupid and juvenile as they always were. They are, and that never seems to change. I can take six months off from those boards, and not miss a beat. As for the posts on the Drake website, there are a few a year on average.

BACK TO THE CONTEST

The announced goal of the contest is to, 1) have fun, and 2) win cool stuff. To do that you will have one year from April 26 to April 25 2015 to catch as many different species on a fly rod as you can. Sure, it has been done before, but your stage, should you choose to accept the challenge, is huge – Drake Magazine.

In what sounds like an oxymoron to my ears; here are the Drake Magazine social media outlets for this contest:

Drake Magazine Twitter
Drake Magazine Instagram

STEEPED IN IRONY

Odds are, money wins this contest. If you have the money to get to Timbuktu, and fly fish, you’re going to win. Now, how establishment is that? As fun as Drake Mag wants this contest to be, some of the Drake freaks will certainly complicate matters. I’m going to keep an eye on this one … FEEL FREE TO THINK.
