CCA TEXAS
Dear CCA Member(s),

This coming Thursday, March 27th in Austin, our TPWD Commissioners will vote on two very important proposals regarding speckled trout and flounder regulation changes. We would like to ask you to offer your support of TPWD’s position by casting your vote no later than 5:00 pm this coming Wednesday, March 26th. The easiest way to do that is go to TPWD’s website and cast your vote electronically. Click on their website at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/business/feedback/public_comment/proposals/201403_fishing.phtml, scroll down to “Saltwater Proposals” and cast your ballot. As an alternative to voting electronically you can e-mail your vote to [email protected] or call him at 512-389-4775. Below is our CCA Board Approved Position. Thank you for your support.

Coastal Conservation Association’s mission since inception has been to conserve, promote and enhance the present and future availability of our coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the general public.

Although the science is inconclusive at this point, we support the Coastal Resource Advisory Committee and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission in their proactive approach to conservation and potential resource enhancement of speckled trout by reducing the limit to five fish per day south of Highway 457. With that, we stress the need for regular review of the conservation impact of this regulatory change and a sunset plan of no longer than five years to measure its effectiveness. Additionally, CCA recommends that the Commission consider a two-day bag in possession limit for speckled trout on a statewide basis, including the Lower Laguna Madre.

CCA continues to encourage an October, November and December closure to commercial and recreational flounder gigging and are pleased with the Commission’s proposal of additional closures in December. We are encouraged to see the continued attention toward the conservation of this important recreational species.

CCA also supports the two-year closure to certain identified oyster reefs during restoration efforts. This is a vital conservation measure to ensure that habitat restoration projects are successful.
