It appears that “The River Why” with Zach Gilford, Amber Heard, William Hurt and Dallas Roberts is now available for purchase on blue ray and DVD. Like so many fly fishing ventures, this one was in doubt all along, after the David James Duncan novel from 1983 ran into well documented roadblocks, including two versions of the same film supposedly being in production at the same time.

We will have to wait and see just how well a fly fishing classic translates into the visual world, but there’s never been a better time for a new burst of energy in the wider fly world than right now. I never heard of the director Matthew Leutwyler, so chances are he can’t hurt himself any by taking on a project decades in the making. Still, making a classic is a job not too many would envy.

NOTE – I will go ahead and put it in the Amazon “wish list” and let you know when I am about to give it a viewing. I reviewed the book a long time ago, but am not finding a link to it.

OK, this one looks good! How many previews have we seen that never came to final fruition, or at least I have never seen them. The Fly Bar is ready to show a few first run movies, or maybe we will all have to pitch in and rent the Movie Tavern for some midnight madness!

John Townes Van Zandt? John … Townes … Van Zandt?

A while back someone got me one of those things for my iPod (video) that you simply set it into, and you have speakers so that you can listen to music unassisted by, or without the need for earbuds. It fits perfectly into my fly tying bench, and there it has sat – belting out Led Zeppelin to Willie Nelson.

So I started thinking why not go for the overdose? I ripped some of the movies I have using Toast’s Popcorn to fit my iPod, and now I can listen to and watch my small collection of DVD’s and tie flies at the same time. Is that cool or what? Too bad the screen is so small, but then I am usually wearing 10X magnifiers anyway. So far I have Drift, Soul Fish, Trout Bum Diaries Vol.1, Tarpon and Location X. Once you rip them down they really don’t take that much space on your iPod.
