Ode to a dead Talapia
blogadmin on December 12, 2007 in Fish Kill, Life Observed, TECHNICAL Comments OffThe weather is proving to be itself this week, with rain and cold fronts – turned warm fronts – turned cold fronts passing back and forth through North Texas.
Word of dead fish at South Lakes Park apparently got to the people in the know, and it turns out to be a normal annual die out of Talapia that were put there to control algae. The weather usually kills them off in time for migrating birds to feed on them, but the birds have already taken flight and the water temperatures have just begun to drop.
I have tried to interest local biologist in what is going on at Texoma Lake, but this is a busy time for all. It may not even be a story.
This weekend finds me in Austin, and I am just itching to scratch the fishing itch down there. If anyone has recommendations on how / where / when / what, please feel free to share. Are there even any good fly shops in Austin?
